John ''Poppy'' P. Meehan, 64, of Sleightsburg, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Benedictine Hospital. He was born October 4, 1944 in Kingston, NY to the late George and Elizabeth (Neumann) Meehan.
He was married to Kristine "Tina" Coling Meehan, they wed on September 8, 1984 at 1st Baptist Church of Kingston. He was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1962 and served in US Army, Vietnam, a member of the "Big Red 1", Spader Unit.
John had been a long time employee of the Town of Esopus Water Department, retiring after 37 years in 2006, he was then was employed by the Town of Esopus at the Town Hall.
He was an active member and trustee of the Banner of Love Church in Port Ewen, served on the Water and Sewer Board of the Town of Esopus, and on the cemetery commission of the Riverview Cemetery.
He enjoyed classical music, theater and antiques.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his loving children Travis M. Meehan, Saugerties, NY, Elizabeth Lyons, Ulster Park, NY and Jeanette Sottile, Olathe, KS, brother Dennis Meehan, Connelly, NY, and 9 grandchildren, Anthony, Kurt, Rachel, Seth, Jessica, Courtney, Brianna, Brandon and Grace many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 216 Broadway, and Port Ewen. The family will receive their friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2- 4 and 7 - 9 pm. The Funeral service will be held at the Banner of Love Church, Port Ewen on Monday at 11 am. Pastor P. J. Hanley, officiating.
Burial in Riverview Cemetery, Port Ewen with military honors provided by Joyce Schirick Post # 1386 VFW.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Banner of Love Church, PO Box 1300, Port Ewen, NY 12466
