John Nicholas

John A. Nicholas, 96, of Kingston, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 21, 2024 with his family by his side. He was born on April 19, 1928, in Kingston, NY son of the late Anthony and Bertha (Berger) Nicholas. He was married to the late Irene (Chmura) Nicholas, they wed on October 4, 1952 at Saint Joseph's Church.

John was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1946. He was a member of the junior marching band where he played the drums. He later served in the US Army during the Korean War from June 1953 to June 1955 at Fort Eustis, VA as a Corporal. He served five years in the reserves from 1955 to 1960 in Kingston, NY 854th Engineering Battalion as a Sergeant. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked for IBM in Kingston and Poughkeepsie for 34 years before retiring in 1990 as a financial analyst and business planner. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club.

He was a very active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church (confirmed in 1942) where he served as treasurer for over 40 years. John was an avid golfer and was a member of the Wiltwyck Golf Club since 1980 until his passing. He also served as treasurer of the men's league for 13 years. He also enjoyed his bowling league for most of his adult life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending family reunions, loved dancing and was passionate about his flowers and gardens. 

He is survived by his son, Kim (Ellen) Nicholas, his daughter, Lisa (Gary) Nicholas Beahan, his five grandchildren, Aiden (Lauren) Nicholas, Miles (Lillie) Nicholas, Christina (Willard) Boarman, Holly (Matthew) Deans, and Katherine Nicholas. In addition to his wife and parents, John is predeceased by his sisters, Beverly Peterson and Delores McCardle. He was well loved by his family and friends.

Arrangements entrusted to Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401, where family and friends may visit on Thursday October 3rd, 2024, from 4pm to 7pm. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday October 4th, 2024, at 11am. Burial will follow in Montrepose Cemetery, Kingston, NY.
