"Captain" John N. Hoy, Jr., passed quietly at HealthAlliance Mary's Ave. Campus on Sunday, March 10, 2013. He was 86.
He was born in Queens, NY, a son of the late John N. and Ethel Florence Hoy. John was a US Merchant Marine who served during WW II running on ships that carried supplies and equipment in areas with no backup for the combined Allies. He was one of the few Merchant Marines to serve in all corridors of the war: Pacific, Mediterranean Middle East, and Atlantic.
John was a US Coast Guard Captain, owner and operator of 3 commercial fishing vessels. As a marine diesel mechanic he worked the east coast from Conn. to Florida.
He moved from Freeport, Long Island and then settled in Connelly on the Rondout Creek. John owned and operated Certified Marine Service in Connelly, on the Rondout Creek. John and Sadie built up Certified Marine Service offing many services to the boating community for the past 35 years. He loved the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, boating & fishing.
Beloved husband of 64 years to Sadie Davis Hoy who died February 14, 2011; father of John N. Hoy III, West Camp, Sharon and Fred Jones of Sleightsburg, Richard and Laurie Hoy, Boiceville, Susan and Bob Newkirk, Staatsburg, Kathy and Pat Bruno, Mt. Marion, Gloria and Stephen Bonesteel, Esopus, and William Hoy, Port Ewen; grandfather of Dustin Jones, Matthew Hoy, Kyle Hoy, Nicholai Hoy and 11 others; brother of Warren and Doris Hoy of Centennial, Denver, CO and the late Marie McMains, Elaine Baxter, Russell, Ronald and Bruce Hoy. Eight great grand children, several nieces, nephews, many friends & loyal customers also survive.
Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Thursday at 12:00 at the funeral home. Deacon Jack Peters will officiate.
