Kerhonkson - John Hartwell Bennett, 84, of Palentown Rd. and Burlington, VT passed away on July 3, 2013 at home. He was born May 13, 1929 in New York City, son of the late Jon Hartwell Bennett and Isabel (Patterson) Bennett. John attended Syracuse University and Pratt Institute, studying engineering and architecture, after which he became Clerk of the Works for I.M. Pei's projects. He became a Registered Architect in New York and Vermont. He was a Director of long Island Northshore YMCA, Trustee of the Manhasset L.I. Congregational Church, arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and AIA Emeritus. John loved sailboat racing-built his own Comet at age 15 and graduated to the Rhodes 19, Shields and sonar classes with which he won many trophies on Long Island Sound. He married Ruth Loraine Dyrness of Seattle in the Marble Collegiate Church on January 14, 1955. His beloved wife Loraine passed away in February, 2006. They were married 52 years. He is survived by his daughter Nelda Bennett Gerner and her husband Hans Nikolais Gerner, his son Paul Hartwell Bennett and his wife Patricia, all of Kerhonkson, NY and grandchildren Caroline and Susanna Gerner and Paul II and Juliana Bennett. Friends will be received at the Keyser Funeral and Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, NY on Sunday from 3-5 PM. A service of committal will take place on Monday, 1:00 PM in So.
