Joan C. Ewin, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, 96, of Tillson, N.Y., formerly of Yonkers and West Shokan, N.Y., passed away on February 10, 2021, at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Winner, S.D., she was the daughter of Donald Clyde and Gayle Burks Jackson. At the age of two, Joan moved with her family to Sturgis, S.D., where her grandfather and mother owned and operated the Kresge Variety Store. She attended schools in Sturgis, S.D., and Deadwood, S.D., where she graduated in May 1943. Upon graduation, she was employed by the U.S. Army at Fort Meade, S.D., where she met her future husband, Edmond, who passed away in 2013 after 69 years of marriage. She also worked for the Veterans Administration while waiting for World War II to end and later at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, N.Y., for a number of years, until retirement in 1984.

Joan is survived by her three children, Nancy Spooner (Thomas) of Kenai, A.K., Kathleen Guido (Gary) of Tillson, N.Y., Edmond Ewin, Jr. (Carol) of Poughquag, N.Y., 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her brother, Commander Donald Jackson, Ret.

Two of Joan's greatest pleasures were exploring her family's genealogy and the many backroads of the Hudson Valley.

Funeral Service and interment will be privately.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at a later date.

Simpson-Hammerl Funeral Home is honored to assist the family of Joan with the arrangements.
