Janet Caro Murphy, 82, of Suffern, formerly of Dallas, Texas and Kingston, NY, died Monday, May 23, 2016 at Ramapo Manor, Suffern, NY.
Born in Utica, NY, she was the youngest daughter of the late Samuel & Freda Frank Caro.
Following graduation from Syracuse University, Janet was a reporter and feature writer for the Syracuse Herald Journal. She married first husband, Bob Yallum, who she met in college, moved to Kingston with and started a family. While in Kingston, Janet was president of Hadassah, founding president of the League of Women Voters, and the first woman president of Temple Emanuel. She was active in several local Democratic campaigns in Ulster County, including her own run at Ulster County Legislator, and worked as a political consultant for Assemblyman, later Congressman, Maurice D. Hinchey.
Janet married second husband, Craig Murphy, who she met at the 1980 Democratic Convention in New York City both were delegates. She moved to Craig's adopted home town of Dallas, Texas and jumped right into the democratic political scene. She was on the staffs of former Democratic Representatives John Bryant and Martin Frost. Janet was a congregant of Temple Emanu-El of Dallas. She also published short stories and articles for D Magazine, a city news and lifestyles magazine.
Janet is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Caro Yallum of Mahwah, NJ; her son, Mark Caro Yallum of NY, NY; her sister, Bea Roxin, of Rochester, NY, and much loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Janet was predeceased by her second husband, Craig Murphy, who passed in 2000. Sadly, her oldest sister, Anne Guttman, passed only 2 days before Janet.
Funeral Services and interment will be held privately.
