Janet Abernethy, 91, of Kingston, NY passed away on Thursday August 24, 2017 at Woodland Pond in New Paltz. She was born May 19, 1926 in Kingston to the late Thomas and Margaret (Leahy) Noble. She was married to Dr. Donald F. Abernethy on April 29, 1950. Dr. Abernethy passed away on October 31, 2003.
Janet was a Kingston High School Graduate, Class of 1942, and later graduated from Katharine Gibbs School in NYC and Ulster County Community College. She loved her years during the 1940s of living in Brooklyn and working in New York City.
She was a member of the Benedictine Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the Fred J. Johnston Museum. Janet enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, downhill and cross country skiing, ball room dancing, and swimming at Williams Lake. She especially loved singing, especially show tunes and Irish songs.
She is survived by her children: Meg (Charles Lockmiller) America of West Palm Beach, FL, Rose (David) Brelsford of Hyde Park, Ellen (Ron) Marshall of Hingham, MA, Jack (Rosie) Abernethy of New York City. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kevin (Sarah) Brelsford, Jeffrey (Jessi) Brelsford, Steven (Bernadette) Brelsford, Alison (Armand) Guimont, Michael Lockmiller, Benjamin (Jenni) Marshall, Emily (Wes) Camp, Katherine Marshall, and Joe and Connor Abernethy, in addition to six great grandsons, two sisters in law, Rose Irvine and Doris Noble, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Entrusted to the care of A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston, where friends and family may visit on Monday August 28 from 4 to 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10am on Tuesday August 29 at St. Joseph's RC Church, 242 Wall St., Kingston, NY 12401. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kingston.
