James Francis Garvey, 79, of Kingston, NY, passed away on Tuesday, February 28 2023 at home. He was born on August 16, 1943 in Springfield, VT, son of William and Stacia (Dubanavich) Garvey. For 31 years James was lovingly known as “The Perfect Husband” by his wife Melanie (Sherman) Garvey, they wed on August 17, 1991.
Jim grew up a happy, fun loving kid, playing and growing up with his three brothers in Dalton MA. His life changed forever when he was left completely blind by a car accident at the age of 19. After the accident Jim showed the determination and strength that he would later be known for throughout his life. He returned to and graduated from Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton MA and received his Masters Degree in Education from Springfield College. Later that year Jim was offered a job with Gateway Community Industries in Kingston NY. He was one of the founders of RCAL (Resource Center for Accessible Living) where he served on the board of directors for many years. He also worked with The ARC of Mid-Hudson NY and later finished his career as the Director of Academy Green Residents in 2006. For years, Jim and his guide dogs, Ben and Magnum, were always recognized on the streets of Kingston coming and going to and from work each day. Jim was a calm, compassionate and loving father who always put children first. He enjoyed taking his sons camping and fishing. He spent many happy afternoons pedaling the tandem bike while his children steered through the neighborhood in Tillson NY. Jim also loved working and puttering around on the endless house projects. Jim’s easy going happy demeanor will be greatly missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
James is survived by his wife Melaine, his sons, Jameson & Matthew Garvey, his step sons, Mathew, Mark & Luke Thomas and his three brothers Thomas, Michael and Robert.
