James E. Howard of Lipton St., Kingston, died Monday, August 23, 2010 at the Golden Hill Health Care Facility. He was 87.
A native and lifelong Kingston resident, he was a son of the late James R. and Margaret Long Howard. He received and Associates Degree from Albany Business College.
Mr. Howard served in the US Marine Corps during WW II as Sergeant in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He fought on Iwo Jima and was on the Island when the flag was raised.
He married Joan Conlon on September 30, 1950.
From 1950 - 1981 he was an Auditor for the New York State Department of Audit Control
A lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church, he belonged to the Holy Name Society. Mr. Howard was a member of the Marine Corps League, Catholic War Veterans and was a Life Member of Joyce-Schirick Post 1386 VFW. He served as Past President and long-time financial secretary of The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Fr. Con Colbert Woulfe Division 1, Ulster County.
Surviving are his wife, Joan Conlon Howard; two daughters Cathleen Howard and Christine Howard, both of Kingston, one son Dennis Howard and his wife Louise of Saratoga Springs; one sister Isabelle Blakney and William Howard, both of Pine Plains; several nieces, nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces.
Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral procession will form on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church at 10:00 a.m.. Interment, with military honors by Joyce-Schirick Post 1386, V.F.W., will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
