Jack Albert Gill, 92, of Hurley, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014. He was born March 5, 1922 in New York City to the late John and Helen (Wagner) Gill. He married his wife of 65 years, Charlotte (Cooper) Gill on October 15, 1949.
Jack was a graduate of Kingston High School Class of 1940 where he was on the track and football teams. He later graduated from North Carolina State University where he also played football. In the fall of 1942 Jack joined the Marine Corps. He served during WWII in the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima attaining the rank of Sergeant. After returning home he worked with his father on the family farm until his father's death in 1957. Jack then took over the business which he owned and operated for many years.
Jack was a member of the Hurley Reformed Church where he has served as Deacon, Elder, and Treasurer. He served on the Hurley Town Board for 24 years, on the Town of Hurley School Board where he served as President, on the Hurley Cemetery Board, and he was a Life Member of the Hurley Fire Department. He was a Republican Committee Man for District 2 Hurley for 50 years. He had served as President of Ulster County Cooperative Extension and NYS Vegetable Growers Association.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children; Karen Gill and her husband Frank Spinelli of Glenford, Cynthia Lapp and her husband Arthur of Hurley, David Gill of Hurley, John Gill and his wife Loretta of Hurley, his grandchildren, Julie Arnold, Michael Arnold, Nicole Gill, John Gill Jr., and Danielle Gill, 3 great grandchildren, his brother in law, Robert Cooper and his wife Jacquelyn of San Diego, CA, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his sister, Isabel Gill Mizel.
Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston, where friends and family may visit on Wednesday December 17th from 3 - 6pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday December 18th at Hurley Reformed Church at 11am. Burial will follow in Hurley Cemetery.
