Irene Helen Courtney, 97, of Esopus, died Friday, June 25, 2021 at Thompson House, Rhinebeck, NY. She was born February 3, 1924 in Ozone Park, the daughter of the late Bronislaw and Helen (Palczewska) Chilinski. She was the wife of the late Cornelius F. Courtney, he passed on May 12, 1975.
A graduate of John Adams High School, Ozone Park, after high school she had been employed by RH Macy Company in NYC and then had worked for the U.S. Cable and Radio Censorship in NYC, after her marriage to Cornelius, they moved to Esopus.
She was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception RC Church, was an active volunteer at People's Place of Kingston for over 26 years, doing the computer input for the food pantry, helping in the store and whatever was needed to be done. She also volunteered at the Benedictine Hospital, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Esopus Post American Legion and Joyce Schirick Post VFW. For many years she was the inspector of elections for the Town of Esopus. Her hobbies included gardening and making sure that all the animals in the area were fed.
Irene is survived by her son, Robert C. Courtney and his wife Theresa Nuss Courtney of Kingston and a niece Barbara Terpening and her children. She was predeceased by her brother Edward Chilinski and a sister Mary Jurgel
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston. The family will receive their friends on Monday, June 28th, 2021 from 3:00 pm- 6:00 pm. The service will be at 4:00pm. Inurnment in Mt Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Ulster County SPCA, 20 Wiedy Road, Kingston
