Irene D. Nicholas, 85, of Kingston, passed peacefully Sunday morning, June 28, 2015 at Health Alliance Hospital, Broadway Campus, Kingston. She was born December 2, 1929 in Kingston, the daughter of the late Stephen and Anna Chmura.
Irene was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1949, and the Kingston Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1951. For many years she was an operating room nurse at Kingston Hospital and was sought after as a well-known, caring and compassionate private duty nurse.
In high school, she sang in the Acapella Choir and her love of music continued through her life. She was a member of the Wiltwyck Golf Club, Kingston Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a quietly active volunteer in the community, often doing things without being recognized. In addition to music, she enjoyed spending time with her large and extended family, family reunions, golf, dancing and was well loved by her family and all that that knew her.
Married on October 4, 1952, Irene is survived by her husband, John A Nicholas. She is also survived by her two children: son, Kim J. Nicholas (Ellen) and daughter, Lisa I. Nicholas; her five grandchildren Aiden, Miles and Katherine Nicholas, Christina Aumand, and Holly Deans; her sisters Francis Kent, Agnes McCloskey, Barbara Elliott, and Mary Donohue and her brother, Paul Chmura, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Josephine Morris, Betty Funcheon and her brothers Albert, John and Stephen Chmura.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, the family will receive their friends on Wednesday from 4 - 7 pm. The service will be Thursday, 10 am at the funeral home. Burial in Montrepose Cemetery.
