Howard "Pat" Haines of Kingston died Sunday, November 13, 2012 at his home. He was 89.
A native and lifelong Kingston resident, he was a son of the late Fred and Martha Washington Elting Haines. A US Army veteran of WW II, he was a Combat Medic with the 113th Medical Battalion. Pat landed on the Bartaan Peninsula, Indonesia and fought in the battles of Manila, Luzon, and Leyte. He was awarded a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for injuries sustained on Corregidor and WW II Asiatic Pacific Service Medal.
Pat married Helen Bolash Haines married December 10, 1950.
While serving in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) he worked as a tour guide at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. After his military service, he returned to become a licensed NYS Guide for hikers and hunters. An avid hiker and hunter, he covered most of the Catskill Mountains. He then worked as an automobile mechanic in the Kingston area for many years until retirement. He also installed television towers and repaired televisions.
Beloved husband of Helen Bolash Haines; brother of John Haines and his wife Joan of Biloxi, Mississippi; William F. Haines and his wife Dolores of Rougemont, North Carolina; and the late Cecil and Edna Haines and Oliver Haines and brother of Louise and Jack Grant of New Windsor, and the late Marion Haines Birk and her husband Michael Birk, brother in law of the late Marion and Sykie Planchack. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Reposing at the Simpson – Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Wednesday from 11:00 – 12:00 PM. A Funeral Service will then be conducted at the funeral home at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow in High Falls Cemetery.
