Hilda Irene Brown Carr, 87, of Kingston, passed away peacefully at the Golden Hill Health Care Center on April 16, 2014. She was born February 13, 1927 the daughter of Florence V. Brown and Leroy M. Brown. She attended Kingston schools.
She was employed as apprentice public health educator by the Ulster county Department of Health from 1948-1949. She was awarded a NYS Department of health fellowship to attend Yale University School of Public Health. She graduated magna cum laude with an MS Degree in Public Health in June 1950. She won the first Public Health Educator employed by the Nassau County Health Department and developed the health education program there from 1950-1952. Her undergraduate studies were in school health education at SUNY Cortland where she graduated magna cum laude in 1948.
In the early 1960's, she returned to private voice studies that she had begun in her teens. She undertook studies for a degree in music through continuing education at SUNY New Paltz and graduated there in 1976 summa cum laude with a major in music history and theory. From the early 1960s to 1984, she gave several art song recitals, sung extensively in area churches. She served as Chair for the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series at St. John's Episcopal Church in the late 1970's as well as chairing and performing in the musical Galas presented by the St. John's Committee 1978, 1979, and 1982. Mrs. Carr was Kate in Kiss Me Kate presented at UCCC Summer Theatre in 1974. She served two terms on the Vestry of Ascension, Holy Trinity, Highland in the late 1970s to 1980s.
In 1988, Mrs. Carr began a new career as a licensed real estate salesperson and later a licensed broker and realtor. She retired from Prudential Hudson Valley Properties in 1995 having become a member of the Million Dollar Club in 1990.
She married Dr. Arthur G. Carr 2nd, December 28, 1949, whom predeceased her on September 4, 2001. She was the mother of Arthur G. Carr III of St. Louis, Missouri, Jeffrey B. Carr and his wife Patricia Bunt of Essex Junction, Vermont, Elizabeth Carr Ramsey and her husband Wayne of Tillson, New York, Susan C. Stauble of Kingston, New York, David S. Carr and his wife Gail of Thornton, Colorado, and her only grandchild, Shelby Nicole Carr. At the time of her death, she was a devoted member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church. She worked as a volunteer in the office, served as chalice bearer and lector.
Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston. Calling hours will be held at Holy Cross Episcopal Church on April 26, 2014 at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment will be a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 30 Pine Grove Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401.
