Herbert F. Morehouse, Sr., 95, of Hurley, NY, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025, at home in Hurley, NY. He was born on March 23, 1929, in the Town of Ulster, NY, and was the son of the late Daniel Van Leuven Morehouse and Caroline Amelia Maria Metzger.
Herb was married on October 16th, 1955, to Lois Marguerite Saile. Last October 2024, Herb & Lois celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. A remarkable accomplishment, considering they were married during a hurricane.
Herb graduated from Kingston High School in 1947. Following graduation, he served in the US Navy Reserve from 1947 to 1951. He then furthered his military service in the US Army from 1951 to 1957, where he was based in Korea during the Korean War, followed by being stationed in Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia.
After his time in the service, Herb worked for IBM in Poughkeepsie and Kingston, NY, where he was a computer draftsman and retired in 1991, after 37 years.
Herb was a member of the Hurley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5086, serving as the Quartermaster and bugle player for the veteran ceremonies and funerals. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingston and Hurley Reformed Church.
Herb liked flying, having earned his pilot’s license at the age of 16. During high school he was a member of the Future Farmers of America and later was known for growing enormous pumpkins in his garden. He hit the slopes with the Trailsweepers Ski Club as well as cut a rug with the Left Footers square dancers.
Herb loved his family and supported them wholeheartedly. He would be found camping and enjoying the outdoors, spending summers in the Adirondack Mountains with his family at favorite spots like Fish Creek Pond and Raquette Lake. Herb also loved hockey, especially Hurley Rec Hockey where he coached youth hockey, with his son playing on his team. He stayed late many nights maintaining the outdoor rink so that the ice was ready for the upcoming games. Herb played hockey there as well until he retired and hung up his skates at the age of 68. On his helmet he had written, "Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill". The Hurley Rec Hockey’s MVP Award was named for Herb; referred to as “The Morehouse Trophy”.
He is survived by his loving wife Lois, daughters Lori Decker (John), Wendy Helsley (Steven), son Herbert Morehouse, Jr, and is the proud grandfather of Daniella and Johnathan Helsley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Herb is preceded in death by brothers Robert, William, and Daniel Morehouse, and sisters Marjorie Kingsley, Eleanor Morehouse, and Carolyn Waligurski.
