Harvey J. Sleight

Harvey J. Sleight, 73, of Bowne Street, Port Ewen, died Thursday, November 18, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong area resident, he was born February 3, 1937 in Kingston, to the late Ethel Howard and James L. Sleight.




Mr. Sleight was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1954; he then enlisted in the US Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant in the Military Police, having served in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge he returned home and went to work for the John Spinnenweber Construction Company, he then became a construction project manager, working for TRK Builders of NYC and Try State Builders, of Yonkers. He then went to work for Ulster County, having been Commissioner of Buildings and Grounds for 17 years.






Mr. Sleight was a founding member of the Kingston High School Football Booster Club, coached Pop Warner Football, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was very active in Trout Unlimited and Ducks Unlimited. He had been greatly involved in the rebuilding of the Town of Esopus United Methodist Church, which was destroyed by an arsonist fire in 1977.


He was a member of Town of Esopus American Legion Post # 1298.




Harvey had a great sense of humor and was always ready with a smile and a handshake. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be truly missed and was deeply loved by those that knew him.





He is survived by his loving wife, Helen "Pat" Sleight, they wed on December 4th, 1965, his adoring children, John T. Sleight and his wife Michelle, Lisa Beth Sleight and her fianc' Charles E. Naccarato, Robert I. McCrindle and his wife Mary, Bruce D. McCrindle and his wife Karen, loving grandchildren Jordan Sleight, Melody Rae Naccarato, Elizabeth McCrindle, Rebecca McCrindle and Nicholas McCrindle, his brother Ronald G. Sleight and his wife Joan, he was predeceased by a sister Betty Rae Decker




Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, 216 Broadway, Port Ewen, the family will receive their friends on Monday from 3 - 7 pm. The service will be held on Monday at 6:00 pm, Father Carsten Martensen, officiating. The Town of Esopus American Legion Service will be held at 4:30 pm.




Inurnment with military honors will be private at Riverview Cemetery, Port Ewen.
