Harold J. "Hap" VanNosdall, formerly of Kingston died Friday, March 25, 2011 at Ten Broeck Commons Nursing Home. He was 88.
Hap was a family man, loved by all he met. He was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, a son of the late William and Katherine Kniffen VanNosdall. Growing up, during the Great Depression, he was called upon to help his family of four sisters and two brothers to get through difficult times. He willingly rose at 3:00 a.m. to deliver milk throughout the City of Poughkeepsie in a horse-drawn cart (even on school days.)
Hap served in the US Army during WW II in the European Theater of Operations, mainly in France and Belgium. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal and Honorably Discharged in 1945.
In 1946 he married Frances Spadafora at St. Joseph's Church, Kingston.
Hap worked as a machinist for Federal Bearings, Poughkeepsie and, for 25 years, and later at Hucktrol, Kingston. He later worked at Vanderlyn Battery, Kingston, and after retirement worked for Szymkowicz Service Station, Kingston. He usually worked 6-7 days a week.
An avid bowler and NY Yankee fan, Hap had a witty sense of humor. His work ethic was secondary only to his family and friends.
Hap fought several illnesses with courage, strength and fortitude. His will to live and overcome obstacles will serve as an inspiration to all. The VanNosdall Family would like to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at Ten Broeck Commons for their years of care and compassion.
