Grace Wardner Winne, 85, of Pearl Street, Kingston, died peacefully Friday, December 16, 2011 at Kingston Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 18, 1926 in Glens Falls, NY to the late Howard and Mildred Cole Wardner.
Grace, a strong, spirited self - reliant individual true to her Adirondack upbringing, enjoyed basketball, playing the clarinet in the Lake George High School Band and served as an aircraft spotter during WW II.
She attended Plattsburgh State University and Hartwick College. Always a history buff, Grace exhaustively studied the 18th century sloop, "The Lady Washington" which was scuttled during the British attack on Kingston in 1977. She was also fascinated by family genealogy and the history of Ulster County.
Besides running the family rental housing business, Grace was employed by the Ulster County Mental Health Department as an intake interviewer. She was later employed by Sears in their purchasing department. She generously donated artifacts to several local and state museums.
Grace supported the UC SPCA and sponsored the rehabilitation of many abused animals. She was member of the St. James United Methodist Church and had been a den mother with the cub scouts.
Grace devoted her life to her late husband Robert J. Winne, to whom she was married for 54 years, and to her beloved children, Dr. Michael W. Winne and his wife Deborah Ziros Winne of Hurley, and her daughter Lauren Winne Papadakis and her husband Alec Papadakis, Esq. of Tampa, Fl
Grace was the moral compass and educational benefactress for her beloved grandchildren Brooke, Kristine and Ryan Winne of Hurley and Maria and Robert Justin Papadakis of Tampa, FL.
She is also survived by her siblings Elizabeth Foote of Pine Bush, NY and Margaret Edwards of Lake George, NY as well as many nieces and nephews. Entrusted to the care of the Eric Keyser, Keyser Funeral Service, 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston. Private services were held with burial in Wiltwyck Cemetery.
