Gladys W. Moon of West Chestnut St., Kingston died Wednesday, August 19, 2009. She was 87.
She was born in Easton on February 20, 1922, a daughter of the late Fred S. and Elizabeth MacAuley Wright. Gladys attended a one room country school for 8 yrs., graduated from Stillwater H.S. in 1939 and Albany Memorial School of Nursing in 1943.
She enlisted in U.S. Army Nurse Corp. in 1944 and served in the European Theater with the 306th. General Hospital during WW II. She was also a charge nurse of neuro-surgical wards with McGuire General Hospital, Richmond, VA.
Following US Army service she accepted a New York State Scholarship in Public Health Nursing and attended Syracuse University. She was employed in Washington, Franklin and Ulster Counties as a Public Health Nurse. In 1969 she accepted a position as Department Head of the Discharge Planning Unit at Kingston Hospital, retiring in 1989. She was instrumental implementing "Life Line" at the Kingston Hospital.
Formerly of Hurley, she has lived in Kingston for several years. Gladys was a member of Albany Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni Assoc; a member of St. James United Methodist Church and a member of the Bible Study Group. She volunteered at Ulster Literacy Assoc. and served as Past Matron of the Ashlar Order of the Eastern Star. She was a former Superintendent of a Greenwich Sunday School.
Surviving are one son, Greggory Moon and his wife Linda of Kingston; one daughter Deanna M. Moon of W. Hurley; one brother Gilbert Wright of Hoosick Falls; one grandson Joshua Moon and one step-granddaughter Kelly Dugan; nine nephews and two nieces.
Two sisters Irma Wright and Alice Dockrell, and one brother Gordon Wright all died previously.
Reposing at the Simpson Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Saturday from 2:00 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment, with military honors by the Joyce-Schirick Post #1386 V.F.W. Color Guard, will be in Hurley Cemetery.
