Dr. Gilbert F. Hoppenstedt, a well know local veterinarian and former Ulster County Veterinarian died at his home in Hurley on July 3rd at the age of 97.
The son of the late Walter and Addie Hoppenstedt of Pine Bush, he attended Cornell University and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine Class of 1940. He was associated with veterinary practices in new Jersey and Maryland prior to moving to Kingston in 1945 where he established Hoppenstedt Animal Hospital which he sold in 1989 but continued to practice there until15 years ago. The hospital still bears his name.
He was a Trustee Emeritus of Ulster Savings Bank and serviced on the Boards of such civic organizations as the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston, YMCA, Hudson Valley Senior Residence, Hurley Library, Hurley Cemetery Association and Hurley Heritage Society.
He is survived by two daughters: Sandra H. Hutton of Kingston and Suzanne Hoppenstedt of Monterey, MA, two grandsons: Barrett L. Smith of Providence, RI, and Carter L. Smith of Ambler, PA, as well as one great granddaughter Clara L. Smith. Also surviving are his sister Virginia Rundell of Newark, DE, one niece and four nephews. His wife Dorothy K. Hoppenstedt predeceased him.
