Florence Mae DuBois

Florence Mae Coon DuBois, of Red Hook, passed away on January 9, 2010. A lifelong Red Hook resident, born February 8, 1924 in Rhinebeck, she was the devoted daughter of the late Almont Coon and Veronica B. Rockefeller Coon. she was predeceased by a brother Henry Coon, and a sister Gertrude Nelson, both of Red Hook. She leaves behind beloved daughter Darcee M. Vorndran and her life partner Stephen M. Walker and their golden retrievers Chehalis and Seqoya, all of Catskill, and her beloved companion of many years William O. Smith, of Red Hook, as well as many friends and relatives who will miss sharing a good laugh with her. Her greatest joy in life was devoting herself to her family and the care of her widowed mother. Sans any kind of formal training, she made use of her innate ability of graphic artistry in her early years, before she began a life of homemaking that would see her through her life. Befitting her courageous and adventurous spirit, in her younger days she lived to iceboat and sleigh ride. Midlife found her bowling, bicycling, dancing and enjoying pinochle. Always one to know her way around the kitchen, her homemade cannnolis were treasured. In late life she was quite content not to stray too far from her own backyard, although she enjoyed a good sail, and the majesty of the ocean. Always one to value self-reliancy, in Florence's senior years she took great pride in living independently in her own home. A jack-of-all-trades, gardener and housepainter par excellent wer some of the many hats she wore throughout her life. Those who knew her well knew she was the survivor of a life of adversity, defying the odds by always believing in the power of hard work, love, loyalty, sincerity, humor and perseverance.
