Estelle Kurland, a long time resident of Hurley, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2012 . She was 85 years old.
She was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. She was the daughter of the late Betty and Herman Projan. A brother, Harold Projan, died several years ago. She received her Bachelor's Degree in physical education from New York University. She was a lover of sports and an avid NY Yankee fan. She loved playing tennis, swimming and volleyball. She was a member of the Hurley Recreation Swim & Tennis Club, the league of Women Voters in the 1970s, a member of Women of Reformed Judaism, and a religious school teacher at Temple Emanuel. She served on the Hurley Election Board for the town of Hurley for several years. She was also a member of the Ulster County Board of Realtors and the Multiple Listing Service.
She was married to the late Professor Robert Kurland for 57 years. He passed away on May 1, 2007. In the 1950s she became director of the New Orleans Day Nursery Association. In the 1960s she became Assistant Director of the new Paltz School for Migrant Children. In the late 1960s she became a Realtor and for the next 30 years she remained in that profession until her retirement in 1991. She was associated with Bertha Galley Real Estate Corp. and O'Connor-Kershaw Real Estate, Inc.
She leaves a son, Fred Kurland of Winston Salem, NC, 3 granddaughters: Rachel, Sarah, & Naomi of Saugerties, a nephew, Dr. Steven Projan and his wife Dr. Mirjana Nesin of Nyack, a niece, Elizabeth Gott and her husband Steven Gott of Stanford, CT, a grand nephew, Dr. Michael Gott, a grand niece, Allison Gott and her husband, John Finger, and dear friends and caretakers, Stacey Schonger and Mike Binns of Kingston.
A graveside service will take place in Montrepose Cemetery, on Sunday, September 2, 2012 at 10:00 AM, Rabbi Yael Romer officiating.
