Ernest Hundertmark

May 7, 1958 — December 31, 2014

Ernest Hundertmark, 56, of Kingston, New York, died January 31, 2014 at his residence. Ernie was born on May 7, 1958 in Newark, New Jersey. He was an only child who was raised within the foster care system due to his parents' inability to care for him. Ernie would often talk about his upbringing, describing a harsh life within the confines of the foster care and adult service system. One would think Ernie would have been hardened by these experiences. To the contrary, he maintained a childlike innocence, a caring and nurturing quality that belied his six foot four, 250-pound frame. The truth is, Ernie would prefer to, and often did, run to avoid confrontation. He really enjoyed the simple giving's of life, was always appreciative of someone extending themselves to him, and always offered kindness in return. Ernie would speak proudly of his time as a security guard, a role that was in line with his desire to protect and care for others. He was also an avid ping pong player and proud of his accomplishments as a previous champion in the Special Olympics. Ernie was an avid collector and had the ability to find beauty and value in things that others would discard. Clearly he had learned something in his upbringing that could be a lesson for us all. Ernie was of the Catholic faith. His diagnosis of cancer was received with a calm and remarkable acceptance. He spoke comfortably of his life and ultimate death, being in the hands of God. His faith and belief led him towards all things positive on the other side of life. Ernie spent the remaining days of his life comforted by those around him at Heart Street residence. He will be remembered and missed dearly by so many. Ernie will be reposing at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave on Monday, January 5, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 with Reverend Darlene Kelley officiating. Interment will follow Montrepose Cemetery in Kingston.
