Elmore Yallum, 85, a lifelong resident of Kingston, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Benedictine Hospital.
Born in Kingston, he was the eldest son of the late Charles & Lee Krosner Yallum. Elmore was a graduate of Syracuse University and was a WWII Army Veteran who served in Italy as a radio broadcaster. While in high school, Elmore worked under Bob Browning at radio station WKNY as an announcer. He played clarinet in a band and was a Boyscout Leader. Before returning to Kingston, Elmore briefly worked in New York City, in early television, as a production assistant on the program Schlitz Pulitzer Prize Playhouse. For a period of time, Elmore was also a record distributor. Upon returning to Kingston, in the 1950's, he dutifully co-manage Yallum's clothing and shoe store with his brother Bob, for over 30 years.
Elmore was a musical enthusiast who catalogued thousands of classical and jazz recordings during his lifetime. He was a member of various anglers associations, both locally and abroad and was an accomplished fly fisherman. He fished the waters of the Catskill's as well as Argentina, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Scotland. Bermuda too was a favorite travel destination, where he enjoyed bone fishing for over three decades.
Although Elmore lived most of his life with his parents in their home, he was very outgoing socially and also devoted much time and energy to pursuing a deep and sustained interest in fishing, music and world travel.
Elmore is survived by his nephew, Mark Caro Yallum of NYC, niece Suzanne Caro Yallum of Mahwah, NJ, sister in law, Clara "Scrappy" Yallum of Kingston, cousins, Susan (Mark) Misselbeck of Newtown Center, MA, Steve (Nancy) Krosner of Marietta, GA and God-Daughter, Courtney (Matt) Stano of Burlington, MA. Other cousins also survive.
Elmore spent the last five years of his life dedicated to the ongoing care, support and love of his younger brother, Bob who passed away only one month ago. A devoted brother to the end, our family knows that they are together again
