Elizabeth “Betty” Herdman, 98, of Hurley, NY, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023 at Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine, NY. She was born on October 24, 1924 in Windham, NY, daughter of the late William Burhans and Ethel (Holcomb) Burhans.
Ethel died of Tuberculosis when Betty was 6 years old . After her untimely death, Betty’s aunt Mildred Holcomb, stepped in to help raise Betty and her five siblings. Later Mildred became step-mother to Betty and her siblings when she married William. Together they lived in Windham for many years with their family.
Betty was predeceased by her former husband, Herbert Russell Herdman, whom she married on June 4, 1947. Herbert passed away on June 14, 1983.
Betty worked for many years at the coffee shop at Trailways and Benedictine Hospital. She was a longtime member of St. James UMC in Kingston. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Victor Herdman and his wife Tigre of Tucson, AZ, Richard Herdman and his wife Linda of Esopus, NY, Robert Herdman and his wife Debbi of Hurley, NY, and Sharon Steward and late husband Donald of Kingston, NY, her sister, Margaret Daum of CT, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband she is predeceased by her step mother, Mildred (Holcomb) Burhans, her siblings, Robert Burhans, Grendon Burhans, Floyd "Richard" Burhans, and Stanley Burhans.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the care she received at Ten Broeck Commons.
After a private graveside service, the family will be hosting a Celebration of Life at 1pm on Saturday October 14, 2023 at 1530 Route 9W, Lake Katrine, NY 12449. (the white house on the hill behind Adams)
