Edmond Alan Garfinkle

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edmond Alan Garfinkle, who departed this life on December 28, 2024. He was 87 years old.

Ed was born on August 16, 1937 to Mac and Mary Garfinkle. He grew up in Gloversville, New York. His family moved to Alhambra, California where he attended Mark Keppel High School. He was an avid baseball player and was active in the band, marching in the Rose Bowl Parade. He graduated from Worcester Academy, where he pitched as co-captain of the baseball team. He attended Boston University and graduated from Siena College in 1960 with a B.S. in Economics. 

He worked for Social Security, where he met Anne, the love of his life. Ed and Anne raised their family in Jamestown, New York. Ed found great joy coaching Babe Ruth baseball for fourteen years, even remaining in contact with several of his players and their families throughout his life. He was honored to be the head coach of the host team for the first 13-year old Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, New York. He also made many friends (and a few enemies) umpiring baseball and softball at all levels in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties. He loved his dogs, attending St. Bonaventure University basketball games, watching Red Sox baseball games, and Buffalo Bills football games. In retirement, Ed and Anne spent time in New Hampshire before settling in Englewood, Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, with whom he was married for 60 years, sons Geoff (fiancé Christine) and Dave (Carrie), grandchildren Anna (Buck) Sheesley, Mark Garfinkle, Hannah Garfinkle, and Ben Garfinkle, great grandchildren Audrey and Ellis Sheesley, nephew Zane (Kelly) Zeeh, and Gretchen (Owen) Trushell, and sister in-law Kay (Pete) Zeeh.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at 11:00am at Toale Brothers Ewing Funeral Home, 140 E. Venice Avenue, Venice, Florida and he will be interred at St. Ann's cemetery in Sawkill, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the 45th Anniversary of Jamestown Babe Ruth World Series at PO Box 1103, Jamestown, NY 14702-1103, or a charity of your choosing, in Edmond Garfinkle's memory.
