Joel M. Ginsberg, M.D. of Thomas Street died Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. He was 59. He was born in the Bronx on September 21, 1944, a son of the late Louis and Betty Riff Ginsberg. He served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. Dr. Ginsberg received his M.D. at Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1969. He served his internship at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and was licenced in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia and New York. After two years of private practice in Family Medicine in Ohio, he served as an Emergency Physician in Columbus, Lancaster, and Wooster, OH, Pittsburgh, PA, and Athens, GA. He was certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in 1993. He served as a Clinical Instructor in the Dept. of Preventive Medicine at Ohio State and later as Coroner of Morgan County, Ohio. Dr. Ginsberg was honored as an Honorary Firefighter and received the 1997 Ulster County EMS Director’s Award. He presented numerous Emergency Medicine topics and was published on many occasions. Dr. Ginsberg was the current Medical Director of Margaretville Memorial Hospital Emergency Department since 2002. He currently served as Medical Director, Center for Emergency Services at Ulster Community College since 1999 and Adjunct Instructor for the UCC Biology Department and SUNY New Paltz Nursing Department. He previously served as an Emergency Physician and later as an Emergency Physician and Consultant to Emergency Department at Kingston Hospital. Dr. Ginsberg was an Emergency Physician and former Chairman and Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Benedictine Hospital. He was the current Medical Director of Ulster County 911. Surviving are his wife Marcia Scott Ginsberg; three daughters Rebecca Du of Dayton, OH, Rachel Silsdorf and her husband Arlan of Columbus, OH and Sarah Ellen Robertson and her husband Jim of Louisville, KY; one son Jacob Ginsberg at home; one brother Benjamin Richman, M.D. of Cleveland, OH, eight grandchildren Sarah Heather, Alex, Lydia, Noah, Emma, Jonah, Andrew and Adam. Many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Thursday from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at Simpson – Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., Kingston. A Memorial services will be conducted on Thursday at 5:00 PM by Rabbi Tsura August. Memorial contributions may be made to the Benedictine Health Foundation, 105 Marys Ave., Kingston, NY 12401; Kingston Hospital Foundation, 396 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401 or the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Foundation, 42084 State Rt. 28, Margaretville, NY 12455. Shiva will be observed at the residence on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evening.
