Dorothy Schiffmiller, 97, of New Paltz, died Monday, April 15, 2013 at HealthAlliance Broadway Campus.
Born in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Harry & Mary Hackman Shapiro.
Dorothy lived to be the matriarch of her family. Her life was devoted to humanity and service. A wise-woman of grace and compassion, she was a loving, kind, and thoughtful mother, grandmother and aunt to her close knit family. Dorothy was a Hatha Yoga teacher in N. Miami, Florida for 26 years, and a long-time member of her choral group. She was a lover of music, dance, and poetry. As a student of life she pursued a spiritual path to better understand herself and to learn how to function at an optimal level emotionally, mentally and physically. As a mentor to many, she concerned herself with people and when called upon made herself available to any appeal for support or help. She resettled in New Paltz in 2007 where she lived peacefully and in the moment.
She is survived by two daughters, Hilary (Kramer) Kobrinsky and her husband Leonard of New Paltz, NY, and Mary Nachshen and her husband Paul of LaQuinta, CA, and beloved granddaughter, Arielle Kramer of NY, NY. She is also survived by her niece Judy Joffee and her husband Bob Hughes of New Paltz, NY, nephew Monte Joffee and his wife Margie of NY, NY, great niece, Willow Joffee and her children Sebastian and Camilla of NY, NY, niece Lisa Young of Oak Park, CA, cousin Ellie Cates and husband Bob Cates of Bangor, ME many members of the Joffee family of NY, NY.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Schiffmiller, who passed in 1995, beloved sister, Sidelle Joffee and Abraham Shapiro.
Services and interment will be private.
