Dorothy J. Sumber of Holiday Lane, Kingston died Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Benedictine Hospital. She was 92. She was born August 5, 1915 in Kingston, a daughter of the late Morris and Goldie Kline Berman. Mrs. Sumber was a graduate of Kingston High School and received her BS Degree certification in Physical Therapy from Sargeant College, Boston University. Her professional life was spent in New York City where she was chief physical therapist in charge of corrective rehabilitation at the Hospital for Joint Disease from 1936-1941. During the war years, she returned to the same position. She also served in the Red Cross and the Kingston and Benedictine Hospital Auxillary in 1941. After the war she returned to Kingston with her husband. She became involved in community service and was a founder of the Children's Rehabilitation Center of the United Cerebral Palsy of Ulster County. She later served on its board of directors and was its vice-president. She also served on its building committee. She received a service award for 25 years of devoted service. For two years she was a member of the board of directors of the women's auxillary of Kingston Hosptial. Mrs Sumber was also a member of the advisory committee for the Office of Economic Opportunity at its inception in Ulster County and was engaged in acquiring federal grants. She served for two years as member of the Board of Directors for the Office of Economic Opportunity. She was a member of the Ulster County Health Department and served on the Professional Medical Advisory Committee. Dorothy was a long time member of Congregation Temple Emanuel and she was a member of Haddassah Lodge #1 for many years. On October 5, 1941 she married Dr. Gerald W. Sumber. Surviving in addition to her husband of over 65 years, are two sons, Bruce Sumber and Dr. Jonathan Sumber and his wife Linda of Kingston; two sisters, Beverly Bassin of Madison, WI and Dr. Shirley Fletcher of Delray Beach, FL. Four grandchildren, Seth and Aryn Sumber and Jessica and Jennifer Sumber and many nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at 12:00 noon at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home 411 Albany Ave., Kingston. Rabbi Yael Romer will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of choice. Shiva will be observed on Wed. and Thurs. evenings from 7 - 9 pm at 130 Fair St., Kingston.
