Doris M. Hicking, 87, of the Town of Ulster, died Sturday, September 24, 2011 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 11, 1924, on Staten Island, NY, she was the daughter of Harold L. Wanzer, Sr., and Tilly Jacquin Wanzer.
Doris graduated from New Dorp High School, and the Staten Island Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned the degree of Registered Nurse.
On July 7, 1943, Doris married John F. Hicking, who pre-deceased her in 1999. They were married 56 years.
Prior to moving to Ulster County, Doris was an active member of Great Kills Moravian Church on Staten Island, NY, where she served as an Elder, and Head Sacristan. She was a Sunday School teacher and a Girl Scout leader for many years.
Doris was currently a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Kingston, where she hosted the Tuesday morning Bible Study group. She enjoyed gardening, and used to do the NY Times crossword puzzle every week in ink. Her love and never ending support will be greatly missed by her family.
Surviving are her loving daughters: Lynn P. Mitchell and her husband James, and Kerrie A. Hicking; her devoted grandsons: Jeffrey Mitchell and his wife Tammy, Gregory Mitchell and his wife Serena, and Jamie Mitchell. Doris was "Great Gram" to eight: Verona, Tavin, Brahm, Soren, Dylan, Jacob, Taylor and Olivia. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Marlene Wanzer Mahlum, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband and parents, Doris was pre-deceased by her brother, Harold L. Wanzer, Jr. in 1997
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston. Friends may call on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the funeral home. Services will be held this Tuesday at 11:00 AM at St. James United Methodist Church, 29 Pearl St., Kingston, NY. With the Rev. David M. Jolly, officiating. Cremation to follow at the discretion of the family.
