Donald Chipp Markle

Donald Chipp Markle, 86, of Hurley, passed away on Monday morning October 27 at the Golden Hill Health Care Center. He was born January 29, 1928 in Accord, the son of the late Frank E. and Frances Coddington Markle.


The husband of Mary Schordine Markle, they wed on June 27, 1948 in Ellenville NY, then moved shortly thereafter to the home they built in Hurley. Donald was a graduate of Kerhonkson High School Class of 1945 and served in the US Army in the Pacific Theater where at the rank of Sergeant, he commanded the initial detention of Japanese POW's.


Donald was employed for 41 years by the Central Hudson Gas & Electric Company where, early in his career, he served as the President of the local IBEW 320 Union. Before retiring in 1988, he had been promoted to Senior Manager of Construction and Transportation and was an early advocate of multiple electrical energy sources including hydro and natural gas generation. In the 1950's he sponsored conversion of multiple vehicles to electricity and natural gas. Donald was a member of the Kerhonkson VFW and the Hurley Lions Club.


In addition to Mary his wife of 66 years, Donald is survived by his sons; Donald Markle Jr. and his wife Betty of Kingston, John R. Markle and his wife Sally of Nicholasville, KY and Geoffrey F. Markle and his wife Amy of Chittenango NY, seven grandchildren; Dr.Thomas Markle, Emily, Chris, Breanna, Isaiah, Joanna, and Benjamin Markle, a great grandson; Lee Markle and a brother; Clifford Markle and his wife Carol of Stone Ridge, NY and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Kenneth predeceased him.


Entrusted to the care of the A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston, the family will receive their friends on Thursday from 5pm - 7:30pm with the memorial service starting at 7:30pm. Internment will take place at a future date in Benton Bar Cemetery at the discretion of the family.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hurley Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 181, Hurley, New York 12443 or St. Joseph's Church, 242 Wall St., Kingston, NY 12401.
