Clark H. Mains, 83, of Port Ewen, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013 at home. He was born February 6, 1930 at home in Port Ewen, to the late Edward and Edith (Gavitt) Mains. He was married to his loving wife Dorothy (Vaughan) Mains; they wed on May 21st 1960.
Clark was a Kingston High School graduate Class of 1947. He then went on to play professional baseball for the NY Giants. He was inducted into the Kingston City Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and was inducted into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 he was also the first inductee into the Kingston High School Baseball Hall of Fame where he still holds several pitching records. He later served his country as a 1st Class Petty Officer in the US Navy during the Korean War.
After returning home he worked for William H. Clark & Son Plumbing in Port Ewen before working for IBM in Kingston. He retired from IBM in 1990 as a member of their Quarter Century Club.
Clark was an active member of the Port Ewen Fire Dept. for 60 years. 21 of the 60 years he served as Chief. He was a life time member of the Professional Baseball Players Assoc., a life member and past president of Ulster County Volunteer Fireman's Assoc., life member and past board member of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Fireman's Assoc., member of Fireman's Assoc. of the State of New York, New York State Fire Chief's Assoc., and a member of the Town of Esopus American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Clark R. Mains of Port Ewen, Doug Mains and his wife Stephanie of Port Ewen, Cynthia Mains of Port Ewen, grandchildren, Thomas and Joseph Mains of Port Ewen, a brother Richard Mains, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Edward F. Mains Jr..
Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 216 Broadway, Port Ewen, NY 12466 where friends may call on Monday from 7 - 9 pm and on Tuesday from 4 - 8 pm. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Port Ewen.
