Charles R. Pettey, 90, of Kingston, formerly of Manhattan, passed away January 26, 2014 at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck. He was born February 28, 1923 in Manhattan, to the late Calvin Pettey Sr. and Madie (Lee) Pettey. He was married to his loving wife of 30 years, Margaret (Hymes) Pettey.
Charles served his country in the US Army during WWII. After his honorable discharge, he received his bachelor's degree from Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina and his master's degree in social work from Fordham University in NY. Charles worked for the New York City Department of Social Services for 20 years as a supervisor in the Bureau of Child Support. He was a member of the Brooklyn - Long Island Allumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Sharon Pettey-Taylor, his grandson, Malik Taylor, his siblings, Calvin Pettey Jr., Corine Pettey, all of Manhattan and his brother Lee Pettey of Queens, a cousin, Eva Cassey of Manhattan, a sister-in-law, Sarah LaBollita and her husband Alfred of Kingston, a brother-in-law, David Hymes and his wife Virginia, of Jacksonville, NC, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Entrusted to the care of Luke Keyser of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, where friends may visit on Friday January 31st from 10am to 12pm. The funeral service will start at 12pm. Burial will follow in Wiltwyck Cemetery.
