Charles and Nancy Sass were both given the heartbreaking diagnoses of Alzheimer's nine years ago. As per their wishes, they remained home during their battle, their family providing care, support and love until the end.
Charles "Chuck" Sass, 78, of Kingston, passed away April 6th 2016. He was born January 8th, 1938 in New York City to the late Charles H. Sass and Elizabeth (Wilcox) Sass. He was married to his wife Nancy Ann for 55 years. They married on July 23rd, 1960 in New York City. Chuck served his country in the US Navy and the US Coast Guard. He then worked for Manhattan Hanover Trust as a "Mole" and later retired from the Mohonk Mountain House where he served as the head of Guest Services for many years.
Outside of work, Chuck loved to travel. He took a handful of Hudson River tours, took his grandchildren to museums and Niagara Falls, and dreamed of traveling cross-country when he retired. As a boy he frequently traveled between New Jersey and NYC, smuggling margarine on his bicycle for friends, family and neighbors, giving him the alias "The Margarine Smuggler."
Chuck and Nancy loved and cared for everything wild. Any creature in need of TLC was offered refuge in the couple's home until mended and ready to go back out on its own (even their grandkids). The Sass' so enjoyed nature that they donated numerous acres of land to a local wildlife refuge to remain forever wild.
Chuck was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He made sure that even after his passing he would be able to continue helping others by donating his body to Albany Medical School. This thoughtful decision will aide in the education and research of many future medical students who desire to help others as well. Sailor Chuck, as you set sail on your next journey, may your seas be calm, the sun and moon greet and kiss you goodnight and may the wind whistle you a sailor's hymn.
Chuck is survived by his three children Charles H. Sass and his wife Sung-Ye, Mary E. Hammond and her husband Mark, and Cathy A. Natale and her husband Todd; his six grandchildren Shawn, Trent and Cody Sass, Kira Natale, and Devan and Jake Hammond; two great-grandchildren Jayden Harris and Catalaya Natale; and his brother Bruce Sass and his wife Laurel.
Chuck has been entrusted to the care of Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Ave, Kingston, where friends and family may visit on Friday April 15th from 6pm to 9pm and Saturday April 16th from 9am to 11am.
