Charles Cunningham Canoll Jr., husband of 63 years to surviving spouse Marilyn Ruth Grinter Canoll, father of seven, and practicing dentist in Schenectady for 35 years. He was 86.
Born March 15, 1926, Canoll was raised on Linden Street in Schenectady New York. Canoll was the only child of Charles Canoll and Mae Leonard Canoll and attended Nott Terrace High School where he was a member of the Math Honor Society. He trained as bomber pilot during World War II and after the war he was awarded academic scholarships to attend Union College, the State University in Buffalo, and New York University where he received his doctorate in dental surgery in 1955. He married Marilyn Ruth Grinter at the Dutch Reformed Church in Scotia on August 13, 1949. He had his own practice on upper State Street in Schenectady and reared his family on Regent Street in the town of Niskayuna. He and Marilyn Ruth Grinter Canoll had four sons and three daughters: Cindy, Tina, Charles, Merlynn, Timothy, David and Peter, six of whom survive him. His son Charles died in December 2007. He has 13 surviving grandchildren: James, Grant, Phoebe, Charles, Theodore, Tyler, Meryl, Belize, Kai, Mia, Coletrane, Cayenne and Hela.
Canoll was an active member of the American Dental Society and served both on its board and as president. He was an attending dentist to both Ellis Hospital and St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady. An active sportsman, Canoll was on the tennis team both in high school and in college, and he continued to play through his senior years. He was a member the Edison Golf Club and bowled with Union College Alumni League, where in 1966 he bowled a perfect 300 game. He introduced all seven of his children to skiing. He and his wife also toured by motor home with all seven children across the continent three times to give them a better understanding of the United States and Canada.
After retiring from dental practice, Canoll and his wife moved to Lake Hill, New York and eventually to Kingston in the Catskills. A devoted husband and loving father, Canoll died on Thursday, August 16th in Kingston. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his kindness and his devotion to his wife and family.
