Calvin Stevens

Gardiner - Calvin Stevens, 85, of Guilford Schoolhouse Rd. and formerly of Monroe passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2006 with family by his side. Calvin, the son of Ashley and Fannie Durkee Stevens was born in Cummington, Massachusetts, on April 27, 1921. He graduated from Berea College in Kentucky where he met his wife Annella Sikes Stevens. During WWII he graduated in the first class from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and served as an officer in the Merchant Marine in convoys in the North Atlantic and Pacific Theater of Operations. He earned three Master's degrees in science and education from the following universities: University of Massachusetts, Indiana University, and Syracuse University. He taught science for 17 years at Monroe Woodbury High School. Taking a sabbatical to work on an oceanography ship spurred him to return to the sea. Upon retiring from teaching he began working for MSTS as an officer on oceanography and military supply ships, which took him all over the world. Calvin was predeceased in 1987 by his wife Annella. He was also predeceased by his brother Ashley and sister Lois. He is survived by his sister Alice Burgess of California, his brothers Arlen Stevens of Massachusetts, and Stanley Stevens of Virginia, his children Ann Stevens of Gardiner, Susan Stevens and her husband Gary Keeton of Mount Hope, and Walter Stevens and his wife Chryse Goodman of Eldred. His grandchildren Mara Erin, Rachel, Glen, Daniel and his fiancée Sarah, Ashley and Clara, and many nieces and nephews also survive. He will be greatly missed by his steadfast friend Joe Vermeersch of New Paltz. Passionate about environmental conservation, Cal lived a life of both responsibility and adventure. He loved his pets, wildlife and his family. At the age of 72 he fulfilled a long held dream by obtaining a gliding license and was a member of the Northwest Soaring Club in Frankfort, Michigan, where he flew sailplanes every summer until recently. An afternoon of remembrance will be held at 7 Guilford Schoolhouse Rd. in Gardiner on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at 1PM.
