Bertha A. Rosa Smedes, 89, formerly of Hurley and Kingston died Monday, September 17, 2012 at Sterling House, Deptford, NJ. She was born March 27, 1923 in Kingston, NY a daughter of the late Margaret Bunten Olson and the late Karl Earl Olson and the late John C. Rosa.
Her husband of 51 years, Edwin J. Smedes, Jr. died in 2005.
For 39 years, she was employed by Hercules Powder Co. in Port Ewen. With her late husband, she spent many summers at Sea Isle City on the Jersey Shore and many years traveling the United States and visiting all but three states. She enjoyed researching and reading about her Dutch heritage, deeply rooted in the Town of Hurley. She was a member of the Hurley Heritage Society. Bertha's family would like to thank the devoted staff of Sterling House and Holy Redeemer Hospice for their compassionate care of their mother.
Loving and devoted mother of Sharon Murphy Demas (Andre); Maureen Atene and her late husband Paul; Diana Smedes Mueller (Wolfgang). She is also survived by her loving sister, Sara (Skippy) Miller ( Eugene), loving nephews, Derrick Miller and Damon Miller; her sister Edna Houlihan and brother John C. Rosa III and sister-in-law Shirley Smedes and adored cousin Mary Bunten. Many nieces, nephews and loving friends also survive.
Three brothers, John C. Rosa, Jr., Chester (Bud) Rosa, Francis (Jim) Rosa and two sisters, Hazel (Dewey) Phillips and Olive (Tootie) Rosa died previously.
Entrusted to the care of Paul Geary of the A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave., Kingston where friends will be received on Sunday from 11 - 1 PM. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm by the Rev. David Jolly. Interment will follow in Hurley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Hurley Heritage Society, P.O.
