Colonel Bernard ''Bud'' P. Jones, Sr., US Army, Ret., 78, of W. Chester Street, Kingston, NY, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Kingston Hospital, Kingston, NY. He was born August 5, 1930 in Kingston, NY to the late Paul E. and M. Rosemary (Prentice) Jones.
He was the husband of Nancy Chase Jones; they wed on June 22, 1952 at Kingston, NY.
Colonel Jones had served in the US Army, Artillery for over 28 years. He had overseas tours in Germany, Korea (2 tours) Vietnam and Japan. He had also been stationed in Alaska for nine years.
His decorations included the Air Medal, Bronze Star, five Legions of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Army Commendation Medal and the Korean Meritorious Medal.
While in Alaska he served as a member of the Alaska State Board of Education, Citizens Advisory Board for the University of Alaska, and a member of the Mayor of Anchorage's Transportation Advisory Committee.
He graduated from Kingston High School in 1947 where he played on the 1947 DUSO football championship team and received Honorable Mention on the ALL DUSO Team. A graduate of Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute in Farmingdale, Long Island, he majored in floriculture and was employed by Brown's Florist following his graduation. He received his BS degree from Alaska Methodist University, Anchorage, Alaska in 1974.
Returning to Kingston after his retirement from the Army, he joined the firm of Shatemuck Realty and was President of that company. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church since 1932 and served in many capacities including President of the board of Trustees for many years.
He was a long time member of Kingston Kiwanis Club and served as Secretary for over 26 years.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his son Bryan F. Jones, his grandchildren Alexandra Nicole, Brett Paul, Liam Ronald Paul and Camry Lee Jones, daughter in laws Claudia and Rebecca Jones, twin sister Barbara Gibson, Lebanon, TN, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Father of the late Bernard "Bernie" P. Jones II.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, where the procession will form on Saturday April 18th at 9:15 am. and proceed to St. James United Methodist Church where services will be at 10:00 am., Rev. David M. Jolly, officiating.
Burial in Wiltwyck Cemetery, Kingston on Saturday, April 18 with military honors.
