Barrett "Barry" Warren of Troy, NY, and most recently of the Northeast Center for Special Care, Lake Katrine, NY, died Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Kingston Hospital. He was 66. A lifetime resident of Troy, he was the son of Alberto T. and Eileen Gallagher Warren. He graduated from North County School in Lake Placid, NY, and attended the Gow School in South Wales and Northwood High School, Lake Placid. He enjoyed spending summers with family on Lake George, in Bolton Landing, NY. On March 3, 1961 Barry was injured in a ski jumping competition. He sustained a C-5/6 quadriplegia spinal cord injury. Following 2 years of rehabilitation, he returned home in March 1963 and graduated from Troy High School in 1965. Barry received a Bachelor of Science from SUNY Albany in 1969, a Masters of Science (Human Factors) from SUNY Albany in 1971 and a M.B.A. from Russell Sage College in 1987. He worked from 1972 - 1974 at the NYS Employment Service, from 1977- 1982 at Albany Medical Center Hospital. From 1982 - 2003 Barry was a financial analyst for NYS Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD.) In 1975 he served as a board member of Wheels to Independence., As a quadriplegic, Barry traversed the continental US more than 40 times. Driving his own car and sometimes towing a trailer, he visited numerous National Parks, historic battlefields, aeronautical museums, and attended many NASA launches in the 1960's and 1970's. Barry competed in wheelchair athletics in regional meets and 4 National Championships. In 1973 he earned 3rd place in table tennis and 2nd in javelin. His passions included Amateur Radio (Extra Class License N2BW), building amateur radio and audiovisual electronic equipment, building and racing radio-controlled model sail boats, wood working, photography, personal investing, travel, NASA space program, classical music, trombone, flying, and taking courses in calculus and advanced math.
Surviving are three sisters, Poppy Fletcher and her husband Terry of New London, NH, Eileen Dana Warren of New Paltz, and Nancy Beard and her husband Karl of Kingston; several nieces and nephews; Dana Keene Fletcher, Wendy Fletcher Kingsley, Annika and Christopher Beard; several grand nieces and nephew and numerous cousins. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 25, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the Oakwood Cemetery chapel, Troy, NY. Oakwood Cemetery is located near the Lansingburgh area of northern Troy, New York, east of Cohoes and northeast of Albany, the capital of New York State. Oakwood Avenue, is Route 40. There is an entrance to the cemetery from Oakwood Avenue. The office is at the bottom of the hill, at the east end of 101st Street. The office is best reached from 101st Street off of River Street. NOTE: If you are using mapping software to find the Chapel and main part of the cemetery, use "186 Oakwood Avenue" Do not put in "50 101st Street".
Route 40 (Oakwood Ave.) intersects with Route 142 to the north and Route 7 to the south, near the center of Troy. Route 7 in Troy is also called Hoosick Street. Interstate 787 has an exit to Troy at Route 7. (Don't be confused, because Route 7 in New York State becomes Route 9 at the Vermont border).
From Hoosick Street, turn north on Route 40. Go past St. Mary's Hospital and Frear Park. Within a half mile you will see on your left the entrance to Oakwood Cemetery.
