Barbara Graves Paul - Barbara Graves Paul, 89, of Hurley passed away peacefully at Ferncliff Nursing Home on August 8, 2015. Barbara was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada on May 31, 1926 to the late Robert and Marion Graves. As a child Barbara and her family emigrated to Boston and then on to New York where they settled in Forest Hills, Queens. During the depression, Barbara's father worked at Ward Manor on the Bard College property and Barbara was allowed to join him there as a summer camper. Eleanor Roosevelt would visit Ward Manor and as a result, Barbara received a personal, signed invitation to a Christmas party hosted by Mrs. Roosevelt, which Barbara was thrilled to attend.
Barbara and her sister Norma were the first girls from Forest Hills High School to enlist in the service and entered the Royal Canadian Air Force on D-Day. Barbara was a meteorological observer stationed at the RCAF base in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada. She had many exciting adventures way up at the base in Canada, including riding in the Lancaster bomber, the most successful bomber used by the Royal Air Force and RCAF. Barbara returned after the war and graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1946. Her yearbook entry stated "She spent the past year in the sky! She'll be a housewife by and by." In 1960 she married the love of her life, Henry Paul, Jr. and with him owned and operated Paul's Farm, Inc., a commercial sweet corn farm in Hurley, New York. They were married for 43 years until Henry's passing in 2003.
When Barbara and Henry married they embarked on a lifelong quest to purchase and restore the Ten Eyck Bowerie, a circa 1720 colonial era stone home built by one of Hurley's most prominent citizens, Town Burgher Matthew Ten Eyck. The house was their pride and joy and they lovingly brought it back to life, filling it with period antiques and opening it to the public for Stone House Day in Hurley each year.
Barbara is survived by her children, son, Tarquin York (TY) Woods of Marietta, GA, daughter Victoria Jean Paul of Kingston, son Michael Graves Paul of Cave Creek, AZ and daughter Valerie Paul Stote and her husband Joseph of Kingston, her step-children, Anselma Paul of Emigrant, MT, Henry (Rachael) Paul III of Atlanta, GA and Helen Paul (Thomas) Sharpe of Brooksville, FL, her grandsons, Bretton, Kelley and Sebastian, her great grandson Leo, her step-grandchildren, Eric, Gregory, Lorra, Victoria, Henry IV and Sheldon and by her sisters Norma Bozian of New Jersey and Marjorie Donnelly of Florida as well as several nieces. Barbara is predeceased by her brother Robert Graves (former Principal of the Robert Graves School in Port Ewen) and sister Helen Graves.
