Barbara Ellsworth Maynard, 88, of Stamford, NY, died Monday, October 10, 2011 at Robinson Terrace Nursing Home, Stamford, NY.
In 2003 she moved from Port Ewen, where she was born, to Delaware County to be near her family in this region-especially her son James Maynard and his wife, Beverly, of East Meredith, who survive.
Barbara was an exceptionally talented needlepoint artist who spent years, first learning, and then teaching her craft. She was well-known and highly regarded by her students' and was even honored by having her crewel work in use and on display in Blair House, the Vice-Presidential residence in Washington DC. This consisted of working one of 16 formal dining room chair covers. Additional work is also in use at the Church of the Ascension in Esopus, Christ the King Church in Stone Ridge and Port Ewen Library. Barbara was Librarian there for many years before retiring in 1999.
Unfortunately, eye problems forced her to stop doing crewel work, although much of the body of work she produced, which is exceptionally artful, is still in use and on view at both Churches and the Library.
Barbara married Oakley Maynard in 1940; they celebrated 62 years together before he predeceased her in 2002. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Barbie Chilson of Chicago, Illinois and survived by son-in-law Rob Chilson. She is survived by her son James and wife Beverly. She is survived by her daughter Maryett Gyula and husband John, and grandsons Jeff and Nick of Winchester, Kentucky. She is also survived by step-granddaughter Ananda Stanley (Husband Don) and their three children. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Hinz of Edison, N.J. and nieces Ruth Plucinski and Linda Parry and families.
