Alice More, 89, of Rhinebeck, passed from this world into the presence of her loving Savior on October 2, 2011 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY.
Born on May 28, 1922 in Trumbull, NE, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Alma (Starr) Potts. She graduated from Beatrice High School in 1940 and continued her education with "Normal Training," preparing her to teach in country schools. In 1941, she moved to Chicago where she attended Baptist Missionary Training School. Upon completing a Bachelor Degree in Christian Education in 1945, she moved to Brooklyn, NY where she was employed by Emmanuel Baptist Church, doing home missions working with children.
She met the late William H. More of Brooklyn and they were married on June 10, 1949. Together they resided in Brooklyn, NY, Union, NJ, Hastings, NE and in 1957 settled in Kingston where she has resided until her move to The Baptist Home at Brookmeade in Rhinebeck.
While raising her family was her first priority, Alice continued a lay teaching ministry in the churches she attended. She had been a long time member of St. James United Methodist Church, where she actively served. She also hosted many a stranger as well as family and friends and blessed them with her love of cooking and baking.
Shortly after the death of her husband in 1976, Alice began working at IBM. She continued her employment there until her retirement in 1990.
Active in her community, she volunteered at the Baptist Home and RSVP and was involved in the Town of Ulster Senior Citizens, "Salty Seniors", the Kingston Area Council of Churches, and Cancer Drives.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 26 years, William More, four brothers: Merwin, Stanley, Bruce and Gordon Potts, and one sister Ruth Whitney.
She is survived by four children and their spouses: Carol and Ron DiBenedetto of Kingston, William and Jane More of Kingston, Janet and Mike Vahrenkamp of Rapid City, SD, and Jean and Otis Smith of Boone, IA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: James Vahrenkamp of Sioux Falls, SD, Jessie Vahrenkamp of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Jeff and his wife Kalli Vahrenkamp of Birmingham, AL and Janae Vahrenkamp of Rapid City, SD, Aaron and his wife, Kristy Smith, Casey and Dustin Smith all of Boone, IA, two great-granddaughters, Jada Vahrenkamp and June Vahrenkamp, and one sister, Janet Cummins of Bremerton, WA.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Baptist Home for their kind and gentle care and especially the 'good food' which Alice told everyone about.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 11th at 2 PM at St. James United Methodist Church, Kingston.
