Aleck Freed, husband of the late Miriam Gordon Freed, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Golden Hill Health Care Center, Kingston, NY. Formerly of Wethersfield and West Hartford, CT, Aleck was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 2, 1911. After moving with his family to Boston, MA, Aleck went to Boston Latin School, a college preparatory school, graduating near the top of his class in 1929. While in school, he delivered newspapers and won a scholarship sponsored by the Boston Newsboys Protective Union to attend Harvard University. During his college years, he worked with his father and brothers selling flowers on the streets of Boston. In 1935, he enrolled in evening classes at Bentley School of Finance, graduating in 1940. After moving to Washington, D.C. in 1941, he worked in the Government Accounting Office. In 1950, he began working as an accountant for the State of Connecticut, first in Storrs, then in Hartford, CT until retirement in June, 1983. Aleck was predeceased by his father, Henry, who died in 1969 at age 86 and his mother, Rebecca, who died in 1983 at age 101, his three brothers: Morris, Leon and Samuel and two sisters, Molly Liberman and Sophie Levine. He leaves two children, daughter Susan and husband, Daniel Rafkind, of Kingston, NY, and son Gordon Freed and wife, Barbara, of Amherst, MA, five grandchildren, David Rafkind and wife, Valerie, Barry Rafkind and wife Annika, all of Boston, MA, Jonathan Rafkind of Sunnyvale, CA, and Bethann and Rebecca Freed of NYC, and one great grandchild, Julia Rafkind. The funeral, officiated by Rabbi Julius Rabinowitz of Norwich, CT, was held on Friday, October 4 in Preston, CT. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth Torah, 130 Main Street, Wethersfield, CT 06109, Congregation Ahavath Israel, 100 Lucas Avenue, Kingston, NY 12401 or a Jewish charity of your choice.
