Albert H. Atkins

May 9, 1917 — February 16, 2015

Albert H. Atkins passed to meet the Lord on Monday morning February 16th at 6:15. A beloved family man, "Bert" at age 97, was surrounded by his small yet close family and living at the Archcare/Ferncliff nursing home in Rhinebeck, NY.

Albert is survived by his wife of 67 years, Edna Atkins who has also resided at Ferncliff with him for the past two years. In addition, Bert leaves his devoted son Robert G. Atkins, loving daughter Regina Nichols and her husband George, and daughter Annette Wells from whom he was estranged for 60 years and happily reunited. Also surviving are his grandsons Gregory and Jesse Atkins and great granddaughter Samara Atkins, two half-brothers Arthur and Bernie Heidcamp, and beloved nieces Debbie and Kathy Ventura from Athens, NY.

Bert enjoyed being on the water. He spent several years as a cook on a Tugboat that serviced the Hudson River; moving on to the even more pleasant pastime of hours in a rowboat, fishing with his son Robert. Albert's mother and he owned and operated the Kingston Diner, a classic chrome sided restaurant formerly located on Broadway in Kingston. He remained the family cook throughout his life. He was a great provider and during times of necessity would take any job to keep charge of his family even a milkman who drove in the dark with a devoted rooster by his side that believed he was a co-worker. Bert retired from Canfield Machine and Tool in Kingston after 20 plus years as a machinist.

Although most of Albert's friends and matriarchal family have passed, he will be greatly missed and forever loved by those who remain!

Entrusted to the care of A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave, Kingston, where friends and family may visit on Thursday February 19th from 4 to 6pm with the funeral service starting at 6pm.
