Alan D. Levy, 78, of Kingston, died Sunday, August 14, 2016, at his home.
Born in the Bronx, he was a son of the late Carl & Ruth Levensohn Levy and the step-son of the late Lena Cohen Levy.
Alan was a veteran of the US Army. He was a Senior Physical Science editor for Collier's Encyclopedia in New York City. He then worked for IBM for 30 years in Kingston and Poughkeepsie. He retired in 1997 as a Senior Planner. During his retirement years he did freelance writing and editing for numerous reference works. Alan was active in Cub Scouts, Pack #10, in Lake Katrine and coached his children's teams in Town of Ulster Little League and Rec Basketball Leagues. He was also active at Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley as a member of the Board of Trustees and as VP of Finance as well as a Religious School Teacher for many years. Alan was a voracious reader and an avid sports fan which he loved to share with his children and grandchildren.
Alan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gail Nurenberg Levy, whom he married on December 2, 1961, three children, Jay Levy and his wife Laura of West Hartford, CT, Mark Levy and his wife Wendy of Trumbull, CT and Eric Levy and his wife Susan of Bedford, NY, a brother, Neil Levy and his wife Abby of Odenton, MD, a sister in law, Arlene Schwen and her husband Roy of Sarasota, FL, six grandchildren, Rachel, Asher, Noah, Ryan, Gabrielle and Max. Five nieces and nephews, Joshua and his wife Lori, Jenny and her husband, Eric, Howard and his wife Lainie, Matthew and Daniel Wulkan, and dedicated caregiver and "little buddy", Grace Arthur and many caring and supportive friends also survive.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley, at 10:00 AM, with Rabbi Yael Romer, officiating.
Interment will follow in Montrepose Cemetery.
The family will sit Shiva in Kingston at their home on Tuesday, August 16th from 3-5PM and 6-9PM, with a Minyan at 7:00 PM; Wednesday, August 17th, from 6-9PM with a Minyan at 7:00 PM and Sunday, August 21st, from 6-9 PM with a Minyan at 7:00 PM. Shiva will be held at the home of Eric and Susan Levy in Westchester, Thursday, August 18th from 3-5PM and 6-9PM, with a Minyan at 7:00 PM.
