Aija Janums, 65, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 1st, 2013 at Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY.
Aija was born on March 26th, 1948 in Regensburg, Germany to the late Arijs and Lilita Kellijs who were displaced from their native country, Latvia, during the tumultuous times following the Second World War. In 1949, at age one, Aija immigrated to the United States with her family. After graduating from The Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, with a degree in Fine Arts, Aija worked as an artist for several companies illustrating children's books, designing NYC memorabilia, and painting one-of-a-kind children's furniture items.
Aija loved to live and laugh and was always the life of the party brightening everybody's day with her great sense of humor. But more than life itself she loved her grandchildren who often spent their time at "Camp Grandma's" where all the fun was, and enjoyed the endless "Grandma Taxi" services to their baseball and soccer games, concerts and dance shows.
Aija is survived by her son Alexander Janums, her daughter-in-law Marika Uus-Janums, her grandchildren Mariel, Andre, and Sander, her brother Ainis Kellijs, and her sister-in-law Betty Kellijs.
Entrusted to the care of Eric Keyser, A. Carr & Son Funeral home, 65 Lucas Avenue, Kingston, the family will hold a celebration of Aija's life on Monday, June 10th from 4-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 11th at 11 a.m. followed by burial at the Latvian Memorial Park, Elka Park, NY.
