Abram ''Abe'' D. Winchell, 83, of Penstock Lane, Lake Katrine, NY, died Wednesday, December 8, 2008 at Benedictine Hospital, Kingston, NY. He was born October 8, 1925 in Olivebridge, NY to the late Lawrence and Frances (Eckert) Winchell. Husband of Roselie (Risinger) Winchell.
Abe left High School during WW II to enlist in the Navy, Served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations, was a signalman 2nd Class serving on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. After his honorable discharge in 1947 he returned to this area and received his high school diploma.
He went to work for Walter Stauble Plumbing and then became self employed as a plumber, he then went to work for the town of Ulster Water & Sewer Department where he became Superintendent of the Department until his retirement. He also was a respected builder of private homes, and had owned and operated the Corner Washerette. After retirement he had worked for Brinnier & Larios Engineering and surveying.
He was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church and attended the High Woods Reformed Church. He was a life member of Joyce Schirick Post # 1386 VFW, presently serving as trustee, member of Kingston Lodge #10 F & AM, he had bowled in several area bowling leagues at the Mid City Lanes and the Hoe Bowl on the Hill. He was also active with the Wednesday morning breakfast group at Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his brother James A. Winchell and his wife Catherine, Town Of Ulster, NY. Step daughters Suzanne Wilber of Schenectady and Priscilla Topple of Saugerties, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Ruth Nichols Winchell who died August 7, 2000, daughters Nancy R. Winchell, Patricia A. Winchell, a son John A. Winchell, brother, Lawrence "Red" Winchell, Jr and his wife Arline.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 326 Albany Avenue, Kingston, where services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am by Rev. Howard Smith and by Rev. Ralph Marrante, officiating. Friends may call on Sunday from 2- 4 & 7 - 9
Burial in Mt. Marion Cemetery, Mt. Marion with military honors provided by Joyce Schirick Post # 1386 VFW.
